If you live in an older home, you may have heard the word asbestos and wondered whether it could affect your duct cleaning service. The answer is: potentially.

Asbestos was widely used in Canadian homes and buildings for decades because it is durable, fire-resistant, and provides excellent insulation. While asbestos-containing materials can be safe when they are intact and undisturbed, they can become a serious concern when they are damaged, deteriorating, cut, drilled, scraped, or disturbed during renovation or maintenance work.

Where Could Asbestos Be Found?

Depending on the age and construction of your home, asbestos may potentially be found in or around:

  • Pipe insulation

  • Furnace and heating equipment components

  • Insulation around ducts or pipes

  • Plaster, drywall, or other building materials

  • Floor and ceiling materials

  • Vermiculite insulation

  • Older tapes, sealants, or compounds

  • Other materials used during the original construction or previous renovations

It is important to understand that you cannot reliably determine whether a material contains asbestos simply by looking at it. Laboratory testing may be required to confirm the presence of asbestos.

Why Does Asbestos Matter During Duct Cleaning?

Professional duct cleaning involves accessing and working around your home's HVAC system and ductwork. Depending on the system, this can involve brushing, agitation, compressed air, vacuum equipment, and other mechanical processes.

If a material containing asbestos is present and could be disturbed, continuing the cleaning may create an unnecessary risk.

For this reason, our technicians may stop the service if we encounter material that appears suspicious, damaged, or potentially asbestos-containing.

We will not disturb or remove suspected asbestos-containing materials.

Our priority is to prevent unnecessary exposure rather than take a chance with your family's health or the health of our technicians.

What Happens If We Find Suspected Asbestos?

If our technicians arrive at your home and identify material that raises an asbestos concern, we may determine that we cannot safely proceed with the scheduled service.

In that situation, we will explain what we observed and why we cannot continue.

We may recommend that you contact a qualified asbestos professional or have the material assessed before any further work is performed.

Fresh Start Duct Cleaning Services Inc. does not test for, remove, encapsulate, or remediate asbestos.

Safety Comes Before the Cleaning

We understand that having a technician arrive and not complete the service can be frustrating. However, we believe it is much better to stop a job when a potential safety hazard is identified than to disturb a material that could potentially contain asbestos.

This is particularly important in homes where children, infants, pregnant individuals, seniors, or other occupants may be present.

Our technicians are trained to recognize situations that may require us to stop and assess the conditions before proceeding. When in doubt, we choose caution.

How Can Homeowners Prepare Before Their Appointment?

If you live in an older home, we recommend checking whether you have any known asbestos-containing materials before scheduling duct cleaning.

If you have previously had asbestos testing completed, keep your documentation available and let us know before your appointment.

You should also tell us if:

  • Your home has known asbestos-containing materials.

  • Your ductwork has asbestos insulation.

  • Your furnace or HVAC system contains suspected asbestos materials.

  • You have vermiculite insulation.

  • You are unsure whether materials surrounding your HVAC system contain asbestos.

  • Previous renovations identified asbestos in the home.

Please do not remove, scrape, cut, or disturb suspected asbestos materials in an attempt to prepare for our visit.

What About the $149 Service Call?

Our goal is always to complete the service you booked. However, there are circumstances where it is not safe or possible for our technicians to proceed.

If our technicians arrive and cannot safely complete the scheduled service because of a condition such as suspected asbestos, unsafe or inaccessible HVAC equipment, significant clutter preventing access, or other conditions that prevent the work from being performed safely, the applicable $149 + HST service-call fee may apply.

This fee covers the time and costs associated with dispatching our technicians to your property, assessing the situation, and determining whether the requested service can safely proceed.

The service-call policy is provided to customers as part of our booking and estimate information.

Taking a few minutes to investigate beforehand can help prevent delays, protect your household, and help our technicians determine whether the job can be completed safely.
